Editor-in-Chief

Editor-in-chief, Dr. Anu Lahtinen has a PhD in Cultural History (University of Turku) and an European Doctorate in the Social History of Europe and the Mediterranean (Universities of Groningen & Ca’ Foscari University of Venice). She is professor of Finnish and Nordic History at the University of Helsinki and an adjunct professor (docent) of Finnish history at the University of Turku. In her doctoral thesis (2007), Lahtinen studied female agency in medieval and early modern Sweden. Her fields of expertise include premodern social and cultural history, gender history, and history of elite networks. Lahtinen has held researcher and teacher positions at the Universities of Turku and Helsinki for most of her academic career. Currently she is writing the history of the City of Hyvinkää. She has also written popular history, such as histories of scandals and princesses.

Managing Editor

Managing editor, Helena Laukkoski is Doctoral researcher in Cultural policy at the University of Jyväskylä. Her doctoral research focuses on for-profit museums in the Finnish museum field. In her master’s thesis Laukkoski analyzed the newspaper discussion on Helsinki Opera House project. Since 2021 she has been coordinating the digitalization project of Historiallinen Aikakauskirja.

Editors

Dr. Reetta Eiranen is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Tampere Institute for Advanced Study and the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences at Tampere University. Her research focuses on the histories of nationalism, gender, experience and emotions especially in the nineteenth century. Theoretically, she is interested in hermeneutics, narrative studies and biographical methods.

Dr. Maria Julku is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, where she is participating in a Kone Foundation-financed research on the image of Russia and Ukraine in 1991–2022 as conveyed by the Finnish media. Julku is interested in the formation of mental images and information, practical administration, state formation, northern peripheral areas and person-centered historical research. Her dissertation (2022) concerned early 17th-century administrative history.

Dr. Alina Kuusisto is a postdoctoral researcher at Karelian Institute, University of Eastern Finland. In 2017, she defended her thesis in the field of Finnish history on the topic of the politicization of universities in the 1970s, and has since focused her research on regional and educational history and the use of oral history methods. Currently, she is involved in research projects related to rural schools and cross-border cooperation.

Dr. Tiina Männistö-Funk is an Academy Research Fellow and an adjunct professor for the history of technology (title of docent) at the university of Turku, Department of Finnish History. Männistö-Funk's research deals for example with the history of everyday material practices in the 20th century, sound technologies, and the use of photographs as historical sources. In the most recent years she has especially studied the history of urban traffic and planning.

Riikka Taavetti holds a doctoral degree in social sciences and works as a university lecturer in gender studies at the University of Turku. Her research addresses history of sexuality, queer history and politics of memory. Her doctoral dissertation (University of Helsinki, 2018) focused on personal and cultural queer memories in Estonia and Finland.

Review editor

Dr. Anna Niiranen is Research Fellow at the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies, University of Jyväskylä (Finland). In her doctoral thesis (2020), Niiranen explored the cultural history of childbirth in nineteenth-century Britain. Currently, she is conducting postdoctoral research on the cultural history of diplomacy, the role of diplomatic wives, and dress history in the context of the Cold War.
